Tom yam is a soup similar to that originated from Laos and Thailand. Tom yam is widely served in neighbouring countries like Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia, and was made popular around the world.
Tom yam has a distinctive taste of hot and sour, with the use of scented herbs. The basic broth ingredients were made from stock and new ingredients like lemon grass, leaves of kaffir lime, ginger, lime juice, fish sauce and smashed chillies.
Tom yam is usually cooked using prawns, chicken, fish or combination of seafood and mushrooms – normally straw mushrooms or oyster mushrooms. The soup itself is often sprinkled with a generous amount of fresh sliced cilantro leaves. Sometimes, the Thailand milled chillies are added: this gives a bright yellowish brick colour to the soup and caused a more pronounced taste of chillies.
